The 21 pounds in 21 days diet is a non-conventional approach to weight loss, as it focuses more on cleansing and detoxification than alternative approaches.  Also known as “the Martha’s Vineyard Diet,” participants seek to cleanse their bodies by drinking specific liquids every two hours.

How does it Work?

Creators of this diet plan assert that the detox and cleansing benefits allow your body to function better while boosting your metabolism.  With a diet packed with liquids, the increased hydration allows the kidneys and liver to work optimally, which also helps promote the elimination of toxins.

The three basic principles of the plan are:

  • Rest – Since the diet is all-liquid, the body is able to rest from the normal processes of digesting food
  • Reduce – The diet also eliminates toxins, allowing your body to take in less harmful elements
  • Rebuild – As the body is engaging in the first two steps, it is undergoing a cleansing process that allows it to rebuild and improve

What Foods Can You Eat?

As this is an all-liquid diet, consumers are guided to eat a designated liquid every two hours.  With a designed caloric intake of 1,000 calories a day, and approximately 20 grams of protein, dieters are able to consume juiced, pureed, cooked, or powder-mixed liquid nutrients.  By the end of the day, dieters should intake:

  • 40-48 ounces of water
  • 32-40 ounces of herbal tea
  • 16 ounces of vegetable-based soup
  • 32 ounces of either a vegetable or berry drink

Potential Problems with the Plan

While this diet intends to cleanse and detoxify, some nutritionists assert that this diet plan lacks essential fats, proteins, and fiber, which can be harmful for the body.  For example, a diet lacking sufficient protein can lead to muscle loss, while the caloric restrictions can make individuals weak with compromised immunity.  Also, the diet does not allow for caffeine or coffee, so some users complain of headaches in addition to their decrease in energy.  And as the 21-day dieters only consume liquids, going out to eat is nearly impossible.  Paired with this, dieters cannot drink alcohol until they enter the “maintenance state.”

After completing the 21-day plan, the detoxified body can no longer tolerate processed foods or junk foods; if these are ingested, weight gain will occur.  After the detox period, dieters are encouraged to slowly “awaken” their digestive system with a restricted diet of small, un-processed meals.

Cost

Dieters can purchase the Martha’s Vineyard 21-day program and maintenance pack for approximately $199.  Individuals can also prepare their own liquids, however, by purchasing a juicer, or by making homemade soups from the list of approved fruits and vegetables.
